New UK-Belgium power link to start operating on Jan. 31
The first electricity link connecting Britain and Belgium will become operational on Jan. 31, the UK’s National Grid said on Monday.
The 600 million pound interconnector, called Nemo Link, is a joint project between National Grid and Belgian power grid operator Elia and can carry one gigawatt of electricity – enough to power one million homes.
It connects the UK and Belgium’s electricity systems via subsea cables, allowing the two countries to trade electricity.
Both countries are keen to increase their electricity supplies, with Belgium in particular needing new sources of power as some of its ageing nuclear reactors have experienced prolonged outages.
