Powering Progress: A Conversation with Marta Kalinowska

For our third spotlight in this International Women’s Day series, we’re thrilled to feature Marta Kalinowska, whose career path took an unexpected detour from selling Scandinavian furniture to diving deep into data, billing, and metering. Now transitioning to an Operational Lead role on the pivotal MHHS (Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement) project, Marta exemplifies the energy industry’s constant evolution—one where every twist and turn brings fresh opportunities for growth.

A Serendipitous Start

“I found my way into the energy sector accidentally. One CV submission later, and instead of discussing the perfect lounge chair, I was crunching numbers in the finance team of an energy supplier!”

Marta’s journey into energy began with a desire to use her analytical talents in a more challenging environment. Though finance initially seemed promising, she soon discovered her true strengths lay elsewhere, leading her into metering, then billing, and eventually into data management.

“Being open to unexpected career pivots can spark surprising opportunities and skill development.”

Pushing Boundaries & Discovering Data

“A data analyst encouraged me to learn SQL…and helped me realise I had the skills to be a ‘data person.’”

Conversations with colleagues unlocked Marta’s passion for data. By learning SQL, she found herself managing complex data migrations; a far cry from her original role. Over time, her expertise and confidence grew, allowing her to transition seamlessly between teams and departments.

When her path briefly veered into investment banking, Marta felt the pull of energy once again. She’s a testament that once the energy sector has you hooked, it’s tough to stay away!

Why Energy?

“No two days are ever the same. Evolving regulations, market shifts, and unexpected challenges keep me on my toes.”

Marta thrives on the industry’s fast paced transformation. Whether it’s adapting to new technology or navigating regulatory changes, the variety feeds her curiosity and keeps her on her toes. She points out that in energy, comfort zones rarely exist, making it ideal for those who love constant challenges.

Building Tomorrow’s Talent

“Developing a mentorship program to bring fresh talent into the energy sector was one of my proudest initiatives.”

Mentoring apprentices and guiding them into their own leadership roles proved immensely rewarding for Marta. It’s not just about bolstering the future workforce but ensuring the industry remains vibrant, innovative, and welcoming to newcomers.

Her focus on mentorship highlights how investing in others can pay dividends – not just for the company’s progress but for the broader energy sector’s evolution.

Navigating Challenges as a Woman in Energy

“I’ve had to work harder to prove my expertise—especially in more technical or data-focused roles where I was often the only woman in the room.”

Like many women in traditionally male-dominated fields, Marta has navigated skepticism and unconscious bias. Her strategy? Consistently deliver results and cultivate a strong professional network. Demonstrating competence and building genuine connections have helped her earn trust, respect, and leadership roles over time.

Positive Shifts and Flexibility

“Now, I see more women moving into senior leadership positions, and more companies offering flexible work arrangements.”

Marta celebrates the industry’s progress, such as heightened focus on diversity, inclusive workplaces, and practical policies (like hybrid schedules and improved parental leave). These changes make it easier for women to build lasting careers in energy—without sacrificing personal commitments.

Driving Innovation Through Diversity

“We need different perspectives to tackle renewables, digitalisation, and net-zero goals. Having more women in decision-making roles ensures an inclusive, well-rounded approach.”

For Marta, the value of diversity is essential: it enriches problem-solving and spurs creativity. With the energy landscape shifting toward sustainability and digital transformation, a broad range of perspectives is vital to staying ahead.

Words of Wisdom for Future Leaders

“Energy isn’t just about power plants and grids. It’s about innovation and making a real impact. If you’re drawn to technical roles, don’t let the lack of female representation discourage you—be the one who leads the way!”

Marta’s advice is straightforward: don’t wait for permission. Instead, reach out, ask questions, and connect with mentors who can help you carve out your place in the industry. Even if you’re a pioneer in your team, you have the power to inspire others coming up behind you.

Reflections & Looking Forward

“Professionally, the constant changes in energy have made me resilient and adaptable. Personally, it’s given me confidence—knowing that my skills can help shape such a critical sector.”

Marta hopes the next five to ten years witness even more renewable energy developments and an expanded diversity of voices at every level. As she transitions to her new role on the MHHS project, her focus is on ensuring that operations run smoothly, data is leveraged efficiently, and the broader UGP family continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in energy.

Final Thought

“Keep pushing boundaries, because you belong here!”

Note from the Author: During this week of spotlighting women at UGP, we celebrate Marta for her dedication and for reminding us all that energy is everyone’s business. Stay tuned for the final instalment of our women in energy series as we continue to celebrate the women helping to transform UGP.
