Reduced VAT for Charities

Under the Finance Acts 1993 and 1997, if your energy is used “otherwise than in the course of furtherance of a business” for at least 60% of its actual use, then your charity or not-for-profit organisation can receive all its power supply at a reduced rate of 5% VAT, as opposed to the standard rate of 20%.

(Non-business activities are when there is no charge for products or services offered by the charity, or where the income is from a non-business grant or from voluntary donations. Business activities are where goods or services are given in return for payment.)
