As a charity or non-profit organisation, your enterprise is often treated as a business. It is, indeed, run like one, so you may use more electricity and gas like a business would, but this doesn’t mean that you should be charged like one.

There are several ways in which a domestic and a business energy contract differs, so charities may end up paying more than they have to.

Here at UGP, we value our customers, and so our dedicated team of professionals can make sure that you minimise your charity’s electricity and gas bills and maximise your chance at success.

Reduced VAT for Charities

Under the Finance Acts 1993 and 1997, if your energy is used “otherwise than in the course of furtherance of a business” for at least 60% of its actual use, then your charity or not for profit organisation can receive all your power supply at a reduced rate of 5% VAT, as opposed to the standard rate of 20%.

Non-business activities are when there is no charge for products or services offered by the charity, or where the income is from a non-business grant or voluntary donations. Business activities are where goods or services are given in return for payment.
