Time’s up for RTS: What you need to know before the switch-off

rts switch off

An important change is happening behind the scenes in Britain’s energy network – and it could directly impact your heating, hot water, or energy bills if you’re not prepared. From 30th June 2025, the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will begin a phased shutdown, with dated infrastructure finally turned off. Ofgem, government, suppliers, and industry have worked together to support affected customers.

We’ve already been in touch with affected customers about this change, but this blog is here as a reminder – breaking it all down clearly, in case it’s the first time you’re hearing about it.

What is RTS – and why is it going?

RTS is an older radio-based system (from the 1980s) that switches meters between peak and offpeak rates – ideal for electric heating systems like storage heaters or immersion heaters. But its infrastructure is now obsolete: parts are no longer made, and the transmitters are past their serviceable life

From 30th June 2025, a carefully managed phased shutdown begins, affecting small regions first.

If your meter isn’t upgraded, you could face heating issues, higher bills, or being moved onto default singlerate tariffs.

What should you do if you have an RTS meter?

Firstly, if you are unsure whether you have an RTS meter, contact your electricity supplier as they can confirm.

Book in for a smart meter installation: Your supplier must contact you and replace your RTS meter for free, typically with a smart meter that supports similar tariffs and remote readings.

Keep your tariffs protected: Ofgem expects suppliers to offer equivalent tariffs so you’re not worse off.

Be alert and avoid scams: Upgrades are free. You won’t be asked to pay when booking. Any demand for payment is a red flag.

Act early to avoid delays: With hundreds of thousands of RTS meters still in use and appointment slots filling, book early. Even if your appointment is postJune, that’s okay – your supplier will ensure your meter continues working until then.

What if I don’t change my meter?

If your meter isn’t upgraded:

  • Your heating and/or hot water may become stuck on or off, or charge at peak rates
  • You could be moved onto a default single-rate tariff, leading to higher bills
  • You may lose out on smart features such as real-time tracking and accurate billing
  • Suppliers could stop supporting RTS meters altogether, risking interruptions
